Having spent most of the past decade living in apartments, one of the things I was most looking forward to about becoming a homeowner was painting. Oh sure, you can paint apartments, but then you have to paint the walls white again before leaving--knowing that spending time painting was the last thing we'd want to do while moving out, we never bothered. So as soon as we moved into our new home, it was project time!
I'm still figuring out what colors I want for each room in the house, although with an open floor plan, I feel a little bit limited in what I can do. I did know this much: I wanted wainscoting! All the other houses we looked at had wainscoting in the dining rooms and it bothered me that our house didn't. I guess this must be a Southern thing, because when we were casually looking at houses up north, I don't think I saw wainscoting anywhere. We decided to do faux wainscoting by utilizing the chair rail that we already had and picture frame moulding to create the illusion of panels (I plan on going into detail about the process in a future post, so check back for that!). When it came to choosing paint for the project, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to use a non-toxic product and that's how I discovered Mythic Paint.
I've seen Mythic being sold on The Land of Nod website and I was happy to have the opportunity to try it out myself--for this wainscoting project, I requested a can of white semi-gross paint. I have to admit, after seeing the array of colors Mythic offers, this killed me just a little bit, but I knew my husband wouldn't be too thrilled with Chinese Chartreuse wall panels. Mythic Paint is zero-VOC and zero-carcinogenic. VOCs are bad news for both the environment and your health (not to mention the health of children and pets!), so this is good news for everyone. And zero-carcinogenic means that Mythic is free of lead, mercury, formaldehyde, and other nasty ingredients that lurk in many conventional paints.
I think we've all been in a freshly painted room and experienced headaches and irritation from the strong odor. I was amazed that even while painting, I could barely smell Mythic Paint--as someone who is sensitive to many chemicals, I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to paint the whole dining room and entrance hallway without any dizziness or headaches. There was no lingering smell in the room either. No smell! At all!
Admittedly, I don't have enough experience using conventional paints to base a comparison off of, but I found Mythic to be easy to use and clean-up was easier than I had anticipated too. We completely forget to get anything to clean our brushes with, but Mythic rinsed off in the sink with soap and water. I decided the paint we were covering was light enough that I could skip priming, but in retrospect, I probably should have primed. I think my biggest problem was that I used a lot of wonky brush strokes--this became apparent the next morning when the sun hit the wall. Oops! I had to do a second coat of paint to correct this.
Having successfully completed my first DIY home project, I'm super psyched to start on my next one. I've also been plotting to paint a dresser yellow to match a print we have in our bedroom and Mythic Paint just happens to have a fine selection of happy yellow paints--perfect!

Because I know emails can get lost in the ether, I will email the winner twice. If I don't hear from you within 24 hours of the first email, I'll try again. If, after 48 hours, I still haven't heard from you, another winner will be chosen.
I will check to make sure the winner did not cheat by entering under multiple accounts/email addresses. So really, don't even try it. Cheating is not a good look.
Disclosure: I received a gallon of paint and a color deck from Mythic to facilitate this review, but all opinions are my own--I only review products on my blog that I truly love and recommend to my readers. No monetary compensation has been received.
I think I would probably choose Gull Lake blue, but maybe a different blue yet. We are having a boy in 2 months and I want to paint his room blue, just can't quite decide on what shade yet.
I would choose white. I desperately need to paint some of the doors in my house. They are currently white, but it has been so long since they have been painted that they look terrible!
Since yellow is my favorite color, and we are planning on re-doing our bathroom soon, I would choose the color 'Plenty of Sunshine'.
"Southwest Magic," an orange shade, would be perfect for the second bedroom that we affectionately refer to as "the Relic Room" due to its decoration style.
