One of the six Akita puppies that will be going to a new home. The puppies parents will be euthanized following a July attack on two people and their beagleUpdated: Sat Aug. 20 2011 13:32:

Two Akitas involved in a vicious attack on a couple and their pet beagle, have been deemed to be dangerous. One dog has been destroyed, and the other is scheduled to be euthanized.

The dogs have been in the custody of Calgary Animal Services since the July attack in the town of Didsbury. The injuries to the man and woman required over 600 stitches.

Calgary Animal Services' Bill Bruce says the seriousness of the attack played a large role in the decision to euthanize the two animals.

"The attack was a very high level attack," says Bruce. "Whenever you see a dog move into what we call the bite, hold and shake mode of attack, its intent is to kill. 600 stitches to the victims who were known to the dogs is a determining factor for us."

"We'll be weaning her off the puppies in due course as nature would predict," says Bruce. "When the puppies are weaned, and she's no longer necessary for their health and survival, she will also be humanely euthanized."

The six puppies are healthy and Calgary Animal Services has already found homes for them with families who are familiar with raising Akitas.

Kelly, there have been small dogs that have KILLED people, including Dacshunds, West Highland White Terriers, Jack Russells and a Pomeranaian. And it has been proven that the bigger the dog, the less chance of attacks happen.

I love some of these pro dog comments ! What you believe every dog in the world is ok it is only the owners? I don't think so ! Dogs have minds of their own and once they get a taste of blood and attack a person they will never be the same especially these dangerous breeds i keep seeing people getting bit by. YOu never see a shitzu or wiener dog drawing blood and chaos it is always these larger dogs that people have.. Why get these dangerous dogs in the first place ? does a pitbul or a doberman make you feel good to have in your house ? i hope Calgary follows Torontos Ban on aggressive breeds.. too many kids and innocent people getting attacked and i don't mean this one attack we are all writing about ..

I can not believe that anybody would blame the victims in this story. I feel sadness for them and what they have had to go through and what they will be going through in their recovery. The owners and the dogs are the ones that are payng the price for what has happened. You can never blame the victims.

This is unfortunate and result of of the fact that anyone can have and breed dogs - no license or training is required. Regardless of the breed, this was a poor situation and was 100% human caused. Two people and one dog have significant injuries and two dogs will be dead. Quite a price to pay for ignorance and stupidity.

This is an atrocity. These dogs paid with their lives for the failure of their owner. They were killed to appease public opinion. Were they even assessed for their otherwise behavior??? Murderers! I hope at the least the owner is held to very stiff penalties for creating the situation that allowed this to happen AND for the inhumane death of these two dogs! I am so disappointed in Calgary. I felt you were so progressive on animal welfare, yet I think you caved on this one. Poor babies... both the parents and the young taken from their mother so soon! May the owner suffer tremendous guilt for her irresponsibility!

Why is everyone getting so upset about this? They're just dogs. It's a shame that we don't worry about people the way we worry about dogs. If they were my dogs I wouldn't have had to wait for a court to order they be killed. I would have done it voluntarily the moment I found out they attacked humans.

The owners were away and their tenants were supposed to feed and take care of the dogs and their pups. They were doing what they were supposed to. They had contact with the dogs before and no problems. you should read about the breed http://en.wikipedia.

The states and provinces who have enacted BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) have admitted that they are not seeing decreases in dog bites and attacks. The fact is BSL does not work. I applaud Calgary/Alberta for not taking that stance.

The so-called "dog whisperer" uses unproven, controversial methods and admits in his books that his success rate is not all that high. He does what he needs to do for TV - that's what sells. No, someone who owns an aggressive dog should not be trying to mimic what they see on TV, where much of what occurs is not shown (do you know how much footage they have to tape to make a 30-minute show?) and where the techniques are not scientifically supported or effective. These owners should be consulting with a trained and certified trainer.

The reality is that not every dog meshes with our needs and expectations. Humans do stupid things every single day that dogs pay for with their lives. It's tragic, but not likely to change given how many people have no idea how to properly interact with a dog of any breed (and kudos to the thankfully many more people who do turn out fantastic animals).

I am soo sick and tiard of hearing the word VIscious and Akita together it makes me sick.... Yes what happend was Horrible and i cant imagine being attacked and feeling trapped.............but HELLO 4 day old puppies and u bring another animal into the picture what the heck do u think is going to happen.... I believe that Dogs are the way they are because of the way that they are brough up.....So why do the dogs have to pay for humans not giving a shit and not using their heads???? Mabe its times to look at the owners...... Dogs dont ask to b locked in a garage with their new pups while the owners r gone...... should someone other than the dogs start paying the price for utter stupidity.. rip........

These are just dogs, people. Get over it already. Two humans -- with everlasting souls -- were nearly killed by these animals. While Africa and North Korea starve to death, we worry about two stupid dogs? We truly are coming to the end of our current society, just like Rome. God, save us from ourselves.

First of the accuracy of this channels reporting is atrocious, the dogs are outcrosses (look that up and you will have a new word for your vocabulary).

Second instead of using the word attacked in your reports use the word protecting their litter against intruders brining along another canine. These dogs are being destroyed because of the stupidity of the so called victims (I would rather refer to them as intruder)

Third, I would venture to state that the way this news was presented represents typical grand standing by the news media to generate dramatic media.

One only has to have follow the news clips to have seen the dramatic editorialization and subjective statements made by these reporters to make the story seem interesting. Tsk, tsk.... Amateurish, insulting the intelligence of the majority of viewers who hope to see objective reporting, done in a professional way.

I hope the reviewer or so called screener of these comments recognizes this critique for what it is and utilizes it in a constructive way.

As for the dogs, I have shown show dogs and been involved in dog rescue since the 1980's. It never amazes me that animals suffer because of human stupidity. Both the owners and the intruders own some responsibility for these animals death. Owners shouldn't have left them alone and intruders shouldn't have been there.

Having the animals blamed for protecting their tuff where there new pups were is akin to charging the rural home owner for beating in intruder into his home with assault.

Of course these dogs are not at fault, it is the owners who allowed them to behave as they did. My dog has been trained to inhibit her bite instinct. This has to be done especially with the large breeds which can inflict serious harm. The only solution in this case is to remove the threat permanently as the dogs can never be trusted and hope the owners either learn how to be responsible with a large breed or better yet never get another dog, period.

I am so tired of hearing about animals who are killed because of human stupidity. Although I am sorry for the victims.....what were they thinking???? They clearly lacked common sense. I also lay blame on the owners. If this was the entryway to the rental suite, perhaps place the pups and parents in another area? Even the calmest small dog can go into protection mode when it comes to their babies, so quit blaming this on the fact that they were big dogs. Sad sad story. I hope everyone out there learns a lesson from this and these two lives have not been wasted.

As humans grown in population and we live closer together, what we do affects our neighbors more. Therefore, we lose individual rights. Like it or not, that is an Earth Law.

Had these dogs' owner been a caring, educated person, both these dogs would have been spayed or neutered at a young age, and probably alive today. The human and dog victims would not have experienced horrific attacks.

It is never the dog's fault, as the dog has no morals, and cannot understand human laws. A dog has no control over his heritage-breed, management, or sexual status.

That means it is the responsibility of humans and society to do all we can to prevent preventable attacks. Require spay/neuter for large, fighting breed dogs, pits, pit mixes, and Akitas. Permit only those proving their phyical ability to manage their dogs to have breeding permits. Require that puppies be spayed/neutered before sale.

"The couple, who must enter the garage (where the attack took place)to gain access to their suite, had been in contact with the dogs and their puppies on a daily basis leading up to the attack, said Stuhl."

this story makes me both sad and angery. sad in the fact that these dogs are being put down. and angry for the fact that people seem to think it is the dogs fault... its not anyone you ask will tell you that animals can get extremly protective of a new litter. particularly large dogs. and to bring another dog around a new litter of pups is just asking for trouble ... i mean how would you react if you had a baby and some one you saw as a threat to your child just walked into your living room.... think about it people these animals where only doing what comes naturally to them ..

Again the animals are KILLED due to the stupidity of humans. Unbelieveable! Any one with common sense would not have done what those two did... bringing in another animal into the same room where a new mom with newborn pups are. She was protecting her young. This is no different when one encounters a female bear protecting her cubs in the wilderness. I would bet that beagle started barking which then posed as a threat.

Once again animals have to pay for human stupidity! Anyone who takes another dog near a bitch with puppies is an idiot! The dogs were simply protecting their young, as would any living being. I hope the people that were attacked feel the guilt for the rest of their lives and I am sorry their dog got hurt. I am NOT sorry in the least that thee humans were hurt. Stupid stupid stupid. It was NOT the dogs' fault but they have to pay the price.

Some people shouldn't be allowed near sharp objects never mind owning or caring for ANY breed of dog. I've encountered "dangerous" beagles, collies, dachshunds, and pugs among others. In every instance the problems with these dogs were all owner related. A more proper evaluation would have involved a stay at a foster home, among people who really knew how to handle animals. If they found the dogs beyond redemption then they could be put down. These two dogs are being lynched.

It's sad that these two animals were put down. So many people jump to the conclusion that this was a "vicious" attack, but dogs don't just turn around and "attack" for no reason. Anyone, with any amount of common sense would see the error of the victims actions. I'm sorry they were hurt, but looking back, have you no compassion on these owners? Have you claimed no responsibility in this matter?

I feel sorry for the dog owners, my heart aches for you at your loss. I'm sure your dogs were amazing! I hope you have lots of pictures. I'm sure that they are/will be jumping and playing with my pets that are already in a Better Place.

This was an obvious case of the dogs protecting their litter. These people were not asked or expected to go feed or check on the dogs--they admitted doing it on their own. They caused the destruction of two dogs who were only doing what any human parent would do if they felt their children were in danger.

This breed of dog is not known for love of humans. They need discipline with a stern hand and even then are not to be trusted. Pit Bulls have a similar temper. I cannot understand why this province welcomes such breeds of dogs. Other provinces have taken a stand on allowing aggressive dogs in their province. Some dog owners have moved here to Alberta to escape having their dogs put down in their native province. Why does this province allow what others won't? How many people are going to be mauled, maybe even killed before such dogs are disallowed here? I am a dog lover, but not at the expense of innocent people being harmed. Go get yourself a beagle!

SHAME SHAME SHAME on the so called 'victims'. I do not wish a dog bite or any other animal bite on anyone...I've had my share over the years and I was at fault each time, one, leaving my eyeball dangling on my cheek. These 'adults' brought their own dog into this situation and caused this!!! And as a result of their STUPID actions, two dogs must be destroyed. I do hope they hold the memory of that decission each and every time they must look at their scars!!! I for one believe that got what they deserved!!!!

I am saddened this is the decision that was made. These two dogs were only protecting their babies and it is always the animals who suffer because of humans who make the mistakes. Any human would also protect their children and it wasn't wrong for these two akitas to protect their children. To bring another dog in with two parents who have young was another huge error and, unfortunately, the two dogs are paying with their lives.

Well John, then you take a vicious dog and keep it around your young children then. It's clearly not safe, sometimes reality is a slap in the face for alot of folks.....

To kill a dog because it's owner has no idea how to train it is absurd. Whoever made this decision should be made to watch a week of Caesar Millan's TV series. They would learn a lot!
