Having a dog can be a very rewarding and wonderful experience. Dogs give us the companionship we all crave and a truly unconditional love and adoration. They have also been scientifically shown to reduce stress, which in today's hectic world is invaluable. If you've decided that dog ownership is right for you, the next step is to decide what type of dog breed would suit you and your personality best. Here are a few factors to consider before you go searching for your new pet.

Family
The first thing you need to consider is whether or not this will be a family dog. If you have little kids around the house, or are planning on starting a family in the next ten years or so, you'll need to find a breed that is good for families. For example, you'll want a gentle dog that doesn't have the tendency to bark or yap incessantly. You'll also want a dog that can bond to many different people, not just one individual which breeds like Rhodesian Ridgebacks are prone to do. You will also need to consider any other pets you have, such as other dogs or cats, as the new pet will need to be able to become accustomed to them.

Location
Another really important thing to consider is where you live. If you live in an apartment, having a big dog will not only be uncomfortable, but will also be cruel to the animal. Also, are there areas where you'll be able to walk the dog? Dogs need daily exercise, so it's important that you have places where they can get out in nature and run a bit.

Time
Finally, how much time will you have to spend with your dog? If you will be away for hours at a time, you'll need a breed that is more independent. Very co-dependent breeds will experience separation anxiety which can be bothersome to neighbors. It can also cause dogs to act up and chew things around the house. If you have a job that requires you to be gone for many hours at a time, you might want to consider buying two dogs so that they can keep each other company during the time you're away.

Where To Look
Now you know all the factors to consider when buying your new dog, it's time to start looking around. You can search online for local breeders to find out about puppies for sale and also to ask the breeder about the qualities of their dogs. Another option is to adopt your next dog. Research local foster organizations as they will have spent a lot of time with their dogs and will be very familiar with their personalities.
