Unfortunately, my last day in Singapore has been a rainy one. I woke up this morning and went for breakfast and I saw nothing but beautiful blue skies, but by the time I had finished breakfast and was ready to head out, it was pouring. I only had a couple of things I wanted to do today and it was mostly indoor stuff, so the rain didn't really bother me too much.
I grabbed the train to Tampines and then hopped on a bus over to Changi Prison, where no photographs were allowed. This was a local prison that the Japanese used for locals when they took over Singapore in WWII. It was a fascinating museum to walk through with photographs and drawings depicting the atrocities that had taken place there. The old prison was knocked down in 2005, so you can’t see what the actually cells looked like, but you could see from pictures that they were keeping four men in a cell made for one inmate.
From there I hopped onto another bus to get into the city center. I stopped in at Raffles Hotel because the guide books say that you should take the opportunity to have a Singapore Sling at the bar it was invented in. Raffles was the guy given credit to founding Singapore, and this hotel is where he invented the drink, at the Long Bar. It is a very nice looking hotel and the bar was beautifully done, so I ordered my drink and sat out on the balcony enjoying the view of a rainy day in Singapore. The drink was nice, but too sweet for me. It was a nice way to spend a half hour anyway, until I got the bill anyway. The guide books said that it would be S$20 for the drink, which is expensive but it said it is worth it for the experience. That I would agree with. However, I didn’t think it was worth the S$30.60 I was charged for the one drink! I wasn’t happy about it, especially when I considered that would have easily paid for my meals for the next two days, but I paid it and went on my way.
The rain was still coming down pretty hard so I decided just to head back to the hostel. I had wanted to stay in the city and take some more night photos, but with the weather not agreeing with me, there was no point in sticking around. I got back to my hostel and met my new roommate who had just moved in. His name is Craig and he’s travelling from Canada all around Asia for four months. He’s just come from Malaysia and Thailand so I was able to get some pointers from him on where to go and what to see. We grabbed dinner at The Basil Inn by the resort and then I had to get packing. I am up early tomorrow morning to get into town and catch my bus so I want to be ready tonight. Singapore has been great, but I’m ready for Malaysia now!
