Jeremy Maclin 2009 Combine

The long awaited news of what has kept Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin out of participating in team drills at training camp will soon be answered. According to Steve Greenberg of SportingNews.com, Maclin’s older brother, Andre Maclin, explained that Jeremy “is fine “and the Eagles organization, along with Maclin’s family, plan to provide an update on his illness on Tuesday.

Maclin’s brother stated that he, nor none of his family members, were permitted to speak about Jeremy’s condition until further notice saying; “They kind of have us on a gag order until tomorrow. … But he’s fine, he’s fine,” Andre Maclin explained. “That much I can say.”

Almost immediately following Sporting News report even more reports were provided saying he’s not–so I went directly to the NFC East (on Twitter) and asked what the story is. I wanted to get to the root of this report and provide you with factual news.

I asked the NFC East if Jeremy Maclin was in fact fine and the Eagles organization just were not willing to make a comment on the report until tomorrow; their answer was “sounds as if that’s what it means“.

In the event that Maclin would either not be able to start this season, lose the 2011 season entirely, or worse, the Eagles front office and signed 2010 pro bowl receiver Steve Smith from division rivals New York Giants. But if Maclin’s brother is correct, and why wouldn’t he be, then Philadelphia will have an extremely talented stable of wide-outs at their arsenal to carry out an air raid of epic proportions.

Besides the Birds 2009 first round draft pick (19th overall) and new-comer Smith, the Eagles also have two-time pro bowl recipient DeSean Jackson, sure-handed Jason Avant, Riley Cooper who has nice size for the red zone, and Chad Hall who was the Eagles leading receiver in last Thursday’s preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. Let’s not forget about Johnnie Lee Higgins who the Eagles also acquired during free agency.

Combine that with the expectation that TE Brent Celek will be more involved in the passing attack this season, along with free agency acquisition TE Donald Lee, and the Eagles have themselves a very nice situation with QB Michael Vick at the helm.

But I cannot stress enough that Jeremy Maclin is a very big part of the explosive offense we all witnessed in 2010, and without him the Birds just aren’t the same team!

Stay tuned, tomorrow we’ll find out a great deal more on Maclin’s status and hopefully find out if fans can expect to see him in the starting lineup. If so…when? Maclin’s brother seems to think he’ll be available to play. “I’m confident about that as well“.
